Today I wanted to take a practical look at video codecs for storage and archiving types of footage. In this video I show and discuss the differences between my original footage, Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes 422 LT, Apple ProRes 422 Proxy and H264 Adaptive High Bitrate.

I found old footage from a GoPro Hero3 Black that I had shot with in 2012 and 2013 and has huge files but wasn’t sure why they were so big or if I even needed to keep them that big so I started reading a ton on video codecs and learned a lot. But, it didn’t answer my practical question of what do I need to store my old GoPro footage in.

Watch the video to see my A/B testing in Premiere Pro and how I determined that I could safely save 83% of my disc space – down from around 366 GB to 58 GB

Video was shot on my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k that you can get here: https://amzn.to/3aM4KBS
